I had my eyes and stomach set for a particular restaurant in East Capitol Drive but when I was about to enter the premises, I knew it was not open to the public. The place was already full for Sunday lunch and there was a buffet spread. This will be normal somewhere else but probably not in that restaurant. Anyway, there are several other options in the area to choose from.
I chose Yuan at Victoria Plaza on 1 Brixton Street. Let me nitpick and point out that Zomato calls this restaurant Yuan Asian Bistro but its only Yuan on the signage.
The dining area is modern, sleek and kinda resembles restaurants that target millennials and offers a twist on the traditional.
The place probably converts itself into a bar when the sun sets.
Air conditioning is quite ample for me, the lone customer, and eight or nine staff milling around.
I love the mural that looks like Hong Kong.
Alfresco dining for those with dogs and unfortunately, not for smokers. By the way, when I walk my dog Lilli, I still see a lot of cigarette butts near establishment entrances. I guess this law is not taken seriously or implemented strictly.
The menu of Yuan was changed in July so I don't get to try interesting-sounding items like DIY Sushi, Gen Mao's Red Belly, Chicken Tikka Nachos and Sambal Salmon. The present menu is safe and familiar.
This is Special Fried Chicken - " nasi goreng style fried chicken served with fried rice and eggs ".
An order is good for sharing already.
The chicken tasted alright and nothing out of the ordinary.
I had to get another dish since just one is boring. This is Lechon Macaure-Kare - " crispy lechon macau served on a bed of peanut kare-kare sauce ".
The dish arrived with enticing chunks of pork and vegetables on a bed of peanut sauce. This is my favourite Filipino dish and if not for its scary caloric composition, I would have Kare Kare often.
The pork crackling on the lechon macau pieces were perfect and wonderful. It was really delicious.
I dipped the lame chicken pieces into the peanut sauce and bagoong to make them pop with taste. The Kare Kare version of Yuan is very good.
I ended up with leftovers and hours later at home, I drizzled the bagoong merrily all over the rice, meats and sauces while watching senseless videos on YouTube. Life is good this way.
